The Columbus Fountain, located in the plaza outside the main entrance to Union Station in Washington DC, was erected in 1912. At its center is a 45-foot shaft depicting the prow of a ship. A 15-foot high statue of Christopher Columbus gazes south towards the U.S. Capitol Building. A winged figurehead depicts Discovery, and other statues represent the Old and New Worlds. The fountain is constructed from marble, its sculptor was Lorado Z. Taft, and the architect Daniel H. Burnham.

Behind the statue, against the wall, is a large map tracing the major voyages of Portugal's Age of Discovery. The Museu de Marinha (Maritime Museum of Navy Museum) focuses on Portuguese maritime history. It features exhibits on Portugal's Age of Discovery, the Portuguese Navy, commercial and recreational shipping, and, in a large annex, barges and seaplanes. Located in the Belem neighborhood of Lisbon, it occupies, in part, one wing of the Jerónimos Monastery. Its entrance is through a chapel that Henry the Navigator had built as the place where departing voyagers took mass before setting sail. The museum has occupied its present space since 1963.
