  • Inside the Miraflores Locks on the southern end of the Panama Canal. The markings on the wall of the Canal indicate the distance to each end of the lock. Opened in 1914, the Panama Canal is a crucial shipping lane between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans that mean that ships don't have to go around the bottom of South America or over the top of Canada. The Canal was originally built and owned by the United States but was handed back to Panama in 1999.

Originally known as Base F and later renamed after James Wordie, chief scientist on Ernest Shackleton's major Antarctic expedition, Wordie House dates to the mid-1940s. It was one of a handful of bases built by the British as part of a secret World War II mission codenamed Operation Tabarin. The house is preserved intact and stands near Vernadsky Research Base in the Argentine Islands in Antarctica.

  • A sign marks a bomb crater made by a high explosive bomb dropped by a B-52 as part of the American bombing campaign during the Vietnam War. The bombing campaign stripped the landscape of all vegetation, but it has now come back. In this example, bamboo grows in the crater. The Cu Chi tunnels, northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, were part of a much larger underground tunnel network used by the Viet Cong in the Vietnam War. Part of the original tunnel system has been preserved as a tourist attraction where visitors can go down into the narrow tunnels and see exhibits on the defense precautions and daily life of the Vietnamese who lived and fought there.

  • A plaque marking the place the original cherry blossom trees were planted in 1912 next to Washington DC's Tidal Basin. The plaque reads: "The first Japanese cherry trees presented to the City of Washington as a gesture of friendship and good will by the city of Tokyo, were planted on this site, March 27, 1912." The plaque was installed in 1950 by the National Capital Sesquicentennial Commission. The flowering of nearly 1700 cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin, some of which are over a century old, is an annual event in Washington's spring and brings hundreds of thousands of tourists to the city.
