These turbines generate electricity from the water flowing through the Hoover Dam and into the Colorado River below. The turbines stand about 30 feet tall from the ground in this room with another 40 feet below this level. The room is about 650 feet long. At top can be seen one of the massive cranes that can lift 300 tons.

It was built for narrow-gauge track and was made obsolete in 1883 when the line switched to standard gauge. it was then sold to Guatemala, where it hauled bananas for more than 60 years. In 1976, it came to the Smithsonian as part of the United States bicentennial exhibit.

  • A rotary snow plow on display at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado. These machines had a steam boiler and cylinders to turn the blades in front and a tender on the rear to carry the coal and water needed to fuel the boiler. The rotary plow was not self-propelled by required locomotives to push it. The big blades on the front chopped at snow and the chute directed to either side away from the tracks.

  • Begun in 1688, the church was consecrated in 1796. It was designed by military engineers, and some of the old stone facade used some original materials from the ruins of Old Panama. It was renovated in 2003.

The large silver wing and engines at the top are from the B-29 Enola Gay, the bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
