Santo Tomas Church in Chichicastengo at dusk
People start gathering in front of the steps of Igelsia de Santo Tomas. The eighteen steps in front of the church signify one for each month of the Mayan calendar. The church is unusual in that it serves as both a Catholic and Mayan religious site, with both religions sharing the space. Chichicastenango is an indigenous Maya town in the Guatemalan highlands about 90 miles northwest of Guatemala City and at an elevation of nearly 6,500 feet. It is most famous for its markets on Sundays and Thursdays.
